Small business owner policy purchase

How do we let a small business buy a business owner policy online or with an agent, with the eligibility rules applied, the coverage choices explained and the policy bound and issued in policy admin?

Make the purchase a guided path that only asks what the eligibility rules need. Callvu prefills the business from the state registry and public data, takes the location, the operations and the coverage choices on the owner's screen in plain words, applies the carrier's business owner policy eligibility rules (class, square footage, sales, building age and construction, prior losses), rates and presents the options with the disclosures the state requires, routes an application that breaks a rule to the underwriter in the Decision Desk, and binds and issues the accepted policy in policy admin with the documents delivered.

The problem today

The online quote asked a bakery owner forty questions, half of them about things the carrier already knew, and then said an agent would call.

Today, without Callvu

A small business owner wants a package policy and goes to the carrier's website. The quote flow asks for everything from scratch, uses class codes and underwriting terms the owner does not recognize, and ends with a referral to an agent for a risk that was eligible all along. The agent calls back two days later; the owner bought elsewhere the same afternoon.

A business owner policy is a packaged product with eligibility rules by class, size and property characteristics, a small number of coverage decisions the owner should understand (the property limits, the liability limit, business income, the optional endorsements), the state's disclosures and the binding rules. Most of the inputs exist in public records or can be answered in plain words; most applications are either clearly eligible or clearly not.

The straight-through path and the underwriter's path should be the same process with different exits.

How it runs

From the requestto the system of record.

A business owner starts a quote on the website, in the app or with an agent on the phone, or an AI agent begins one. Callvu opens the application and prefills the business.

Business owner
Confirms the business, answers the eligibility questions in plain words, chooses coverage and pays and signs on their own screen.
Agent
Assists on the phone where the owner wants help, seeing the same screens.
Underwriter
Decides applications that break an eligibility rule in the Decision Desk.
Callvu
Prefills, applies the rules, rates, discloses, routes exceptions and binds in policy admin.
  1. Prefill the business

The legal name, the entity type, the address, the years in business and the owner are prefilled from the state registry and public data; the location's construction, year built, square footage and protection class are prefilled from property data; the owner confirms or corrects on their screen.

  2. Apply the eligibility rules

The operations are classified from a plain-word description to the carrier's eligible classes, and the carrier's business owner policy rules on class, annual sales, square footage, building age and condition, occupancy and prior losses are applied; an application inside the rules continues straight through, and one that breaks a rule is flagged with the specific rule.

  3. Present and choose

The property limits suggested from the data, the liability limit options, business income, and the endorsements common to the class are presented with plain explanations and the premium for each; the state's required disclosures and the fraud warning are shown; the owner chooses, pays on a secure screen and signs the application.

  4. Decide and write back

An eligible application is bound by rule; an application outside a rule goes to the underwriter in the Decision Desk with the data and the flagged rule, and only bind as submitted, bind with conditions, or decline with the reason; the bound policy is issued in policy admin as the system of record and the declarations, the policy and the certificates are delivered to the owner.

Where it ends: The owner answered only what the rules needed, in words they understood, and either bought on the spot or had an underwriter decide the exception the same day, with the policy issued in policy admin. The Decision Trace shows the classification, the rules applied and any underwriter decision; the Audit Trace shows the owner's answers, the disclosures and the bind.

Runtime enforcement

What is enforcedwhile the work runs.

The regulations preloaded in Callvu Studio and the bank's own policies, applied as steps that run, not lines in a binder. A step that breaks a rule does not run, so a completed run was compliant.

The handoff

Between the front doorand the back office.

The front door

The website, the app, an agent on the phone or an AI agent; the owner answers, pays and signs on their own screen.

The back office

Underwriters see only applications that break a rule, with the rule flagged; policy admin issues from the bind.

The Decision Desk

  • An application outside an eligibility rule goes to the underwriter in the Decision Desk with the data and the rule, and only bind as submitted, bind with conditions, or decline with the reason.

Questions

What buyers ask next,answered plainly.

What does the owner have to enter?

A plain-word description of the business, confirmation of the prefilled data, the few eligibility answers the rules need and the coverage choices; the rest comes from public records.

What happens when the business is outside the rules?

The specific rule is flagged and the application goes to the underwriter in the Decision Desk the same day, with the owner seeing the status.

Can an agent help?

Yes, on the phone, on the same screens; payment and signature still happen on the owner's own screen.
