Subscription change and cancellation
How do we let a subscriber change or cancel in as few steps as they signed up, with the retention offer kept within the rules and the subscription system updated?
Make the cancellation as easy as the signup, by rule. When a subscriber asks to change or cancel in any channel, Callvu identifies them and prefills the subscription (the plan, the billing cycle and the next charge date, the commitment and any early termination terms, the promotions, the cancellation and refund terms as disclosed at signup), presents the change options (pause, downgrade, skip, cancel) with the effective date and the consequence of each in plain terms, applies the simple cancellation rules (the same channel and a comparable number of steps as the signup, no required call for an online signup, one clearly declined retention offer at most where the law allows any), captures the choice and the acknowledgment, routes a request the rules flag (a commitment with termination terms, a disputed charge, a request from someone other than the subscriber) to the subscriptions desk in the Decision Desk, and writes the change or the cancellation with its effective date and any refund to the subscription system, the system of record, with the confirmation sent.

The problem today
Signing up took one click; cancelling took a phone call, a hold, three offers and a confirmation email that never came.
Subscriptions are the growth model of online retail and the enforcement priority of the consumer regulators. The pattern they pursue is the asymmetry: a frictionless signup and a cancellation designed to be abandoned, with retention offers stacked in the way, a channel the subscriber did not sign up in, and a charge that continues after the request. The complaints, the chargebacks and the penalties follow.
The federal rule and the state automatic renewal laws set the standard: clear disclosure of the terms before consent, express informed consent to the negative option, a cancellation mechanism as easy to use as the signup (online for an online signup), limits on retention offers, and in many states a renewal reminder before a charge after a free trial or a long term. The subscription system holds the terms and the cycle; the process should apply the rules and record each step.
A cancellation that is as easy as the signup, recorded, is the one the regulator finds nothing wrong with.
How it runs
From the requestto the system of record.
A subscriber asks to change, pause or cancel a subscription in the app, on the website, by chat, by phone or through an AI assistant. Callvu identifies them and opens the request.
- Subscriber
- Chooses the change or the cancellation, sees the consequence and acknowledges, on a secure screen.
- Subscriptions desk
- Decides flagged requests in the Decision Desk.
- Callvu
- Prefills, presents the options with consequences, applies the rules, captures the choice, routes and writes.
Prefill the subscription
The plan, the billing cycle and the next charge date and amount, the commitment term and any early termination terms, the promotions and the trial status, the cancellation and refund terms as disclosed and consented to at signup, the signup channel and date, and the subscriber's identity are prefilled from the subscription system.
Present the options with consequences
The options the plan allows (pause for a period, skip the next delivery, downgrade or change the frequency, cancel) are presented with the effective date and the consequence of each in plain terms (the last charge, the last delivery, any refund or proration under the disclosed terms, the loss of a promotional rate); the cancellation option is presented with no more than one retention offer where the law allows any, clearly declinable, and the subscriber's choice is captured with the acknowledgment.
Apply the rules and decide
The simple cancellation rules are applied by the process: the request is completed in the channel it arrived in with a comparable number of steps to the signup (an online signup is cancellable online without a call), the effective date follows the disclosed terms, the charge after the request stops; a request the rules flag (a commitment with early termination terms the subscriber disputes, a charge already in dispute, a requester who is not the subscriber, a plan with a regulated notice period) goes to the subscriptions desk in the Decision Desk with the terms and only the allowed outcomes (apply, apply with the termination terms explained, waive the terms, or hold for the dispute).
Write back
The change or the cancellation with its effective date, the last charge, any proration or refund and the subscriber's acknowledgment is written to the subscription system, the system of record, the billing stops or changes from the effective date, the confirmation with the terms applied goes to the subscriber immediately, and the record of the steps (the channel, the count, the offer shown and declined) is kept for the regulator.
Where it ends: The subscriber changed or cancelled in as few steps as they signed up, saw the consequence before choosing, was shown at most one clearly declinable offer, and the subscription system holds the change with the effective date and the evidence of the steps. The Decision Trace shows the terms, the rules applied and any decision; the Audit Trace shows the request, the steps, the acknowledgment and the write with time.
Runtime enforcement
What is enforcedwhile the work runs.
The regulations preloaded in Callvu Studio and the bank's own policies, applied as steps that run, not lines in a binder. A step that breaks a rule does not run, so a completed run was compliant.
The handoff
Between the front doorand the back office.
The front door
Any channel; the subscriber completes in the channel they used, on a secure screen.
The back office
The subscriptions desk decides only flags; the subscription and billing systems run from the write; compliance sees the step records.
The Decision Desk
- A disputed commitment term, a charge in dispute, a requester who is not the subscriber or a plan with a regulated notice period goes to the subscriptions desk in the Decision Desk with the terms and only apply, apply with the terms explained, waive, or hold for the dispute.

Questions
What buyers ask next,answered plainly.
Can we require a call to cancel?
Not for an online signup. The rule and the state laws require a cancellation mechanism as easy as the signup and in the same medium; the process completes it in the channel of the request.
Are retention offers allowed?
At most one, clearly declinable, and only where the applicable law allows any; the offer and the decline are recorded.
When does billing stop?
From the effective date under the disclosed terms, never later than the next charge after the request, with the confirmation sent immediately.
