Payment recovery on failed payments

How do we recover a failed or abandoned payment by sending the customer a secure link to complete it, and release the order when it posts?

Turn a failed payment into a link, not a lost order. When a payment fails (a decline, an expired card, a failed authentication, a timeout) or a checkout is abandoned at payment, Callvu prefills the recovery from the order (the items, the amount, the hold on the stock and the price, the customer's contact), classifies the failure and the retry rules the card networks and the retailer set, sends the customer a secure payment link in their channel where they enter the card or choose another method on a page that keeps the data out of the retailer's and the agent's hands, chases on a clock inside the stock hold, reads the payment result and checks it against the order, routes a repeated decline, a fraud signal or a changed amount to the payments desk in the Decision Desk, and releases the order to fulfilment in the order management system when the payment posts.

The problem today

The card declined at midnight, the stock was released at six, and the customer bought it elsewhere by nine.

Today, without Callvu

Payments fail for ordinary reasons: a daily limit, an expired card, a bank's authentication step that timed out, a typo. The order sits in a failed state; an email with no link goes out or none at all; an agent who calls the customer cannot take the card without pulling the call into PCI scope. The sale is lost to friction, not to intent.

The recovery is a short process with rules: the card networks' retry and authentication rules, the PCI standard's requirement that card data be captured on a secure page the merchant's agents and systems do not see, the stock and price hold the retailer's policy allows, and the fraud signals that distinguish a declined customer from a tested card. The link is the fix, and the clock is the stock hold.

A customer who wanted the order will finish it from a link in their channel within the hour.

How it runs

From the requestto the system of record.

A payment fails on an order or a checkout is abandoned at the payment step. Callvu opens the recovery from the order.

Customer
Completes the payment on the secure link with the same or another method.
Payments desk
Decides repeated declines, fraud signals and amount changes in the Decision Desk.
Payment provider
Hosts the secure page, runs the authentication and returns the result.
Callvu
Prefills, classifies, sends the link, chases, checks the result, routes and releases.
  1. Prefill and classify

The order, the amount, the items and the stock and price hold, the customer's contact and the payment attempt's result code are prefilled; the failure is classified (a soft decline that may be retried, a hard decline that needs another method, a failed authentication, an abandoned checkout, an expired card) with the retry rules the networks and the retailer set.

  2. Chase and verify the payment

A secure payment link is sent in the customer's channel (text, email, the app) opening the provider's hosted page where the customer enters the card or chooses another method (a wallet, a bank transfer, a buy now pay later option where offered) with the authentication the issuer requires; the link is chased on a clock inside the stock hold; the payment result is read and checked against the order (the amount, the currency, the authorization and the capture rules, the address verification and the risk score).

  3. Decide

A successful payment inside the rules releases the order by rule; a repeated decline across methods, a fraud signal (velocity, mismatched details, a tested card pattern), a changed amount (a price that moved during the hold) or an expired hold goes to the payments desk in the Decision Desk with the attempts and only the allowed outcomes (extend the hold, re-offer at the current price, require verification through the fraud review process, or cancel the order).

  4. Write back

The payment is posted to the order and the order is released to fulfilment in the order management system, the system of record, the stock and price hold is cleared, the customer receives the confirmation, and an order not recovered by the hold's end is cancelled with the stock released and the customer told.

Where it ends: The failed payment became a secure link the customer completed in their channel, the result was checked and the order released, with the card data never touching the retailer's agents or systems. The Decision Trace shows the classification, the checks and any desk decision; the Audit Trace shows the link, each attempt and the release with time.

Runtime enforcement

What is enforcedwhile the work runs.

The regulations preloaded in Callvu Studio and the bank's own policies, applied as steps that run, not lines in a binder. A step that breaks a rule does not run, so a completed run was compliant.

The handoff

Between the front doorand the back office.

The front door

The failed payment; the customer finishes on the secure link in their channel, or an agent sends the same link on a call.

The back office

The payments desk decides only repeated declines, fraud signals and amount changes; fulfilment receives released orders.

The Decision Desk

  • A repeated decline, a fraud signal, a changed amount or an expired hold goes to the payments desk in the Decision Desk with the attempts and only extend the hold, re-offer at the current price, require verification, or cancel.

Questions

What buyers ask next,answered plainly.

How does the customer pay after a failure?

From a secure link in their channel that opens the payment provider's hosted page, with the same or another method and the issuer's authentication; the card data never reaches the retailer's agents or systems.

How long is the order held?

For the retailer's stock and price hold period, with the link chased inside it; at the end the order is cancelled, the stock released and the customer told.

What if the card keeps declining?

The payments desk decides with the attempts: extend the hold, re-offer at the current price, require verification through the fraud review, or cancel.
