Buy now pay later dispute

How do we handle a dispute on a buy now pay later purchase by sending the order and delivery evidence to the lender and pausing or resuming the plan by the outcome?

Treat the lender's dispute like a chargeback with its own rules. When a customer disputes an installment purchase with the lender (or with the retailer, who must route it), Callvu classifies the dispute (the lender, its dispute reason and process, its evidence window, the claim type: not received, not as described, cancelled, unauthorized), matches it to the order, the delivery and any return or refund in progress, assembles the evidence the lender's rules call for (the order confirmation, the delivery proof, the return status, the communications, the terms accepted), chases the carrier or the customer for what the record lacks, checks the package, routes a weak or high-value case to the disputes desk in the Decision Desk, submits to the lender through its portal or interface before the window closes, reads the outcome, and writes the dispute and the plan's status (paused, resumed, cancelled with the refund) to the order management system.

The problem today

The installment plan kept charging the customer for a return the retailer had already refunded, because the refund went to the wrong party.

Today, without Callvu

Buy now pay later adds a lender between the customer and the retailer. A dispute goes to the lender, who asks the retailer for evidence through a portal with its own deadlines and reason codes; the customer's installments continue or pause depending on the lender's rules; a return refunded to the customer directly instead of to the lender leaves the plan running. The retailer's team learns each lender's process by losing cases.

Each lender's dispute rules set the reasons, the evidence, the windows and the plan's status during the dispute; the consumer protections that apply (the lender's own, and where the lender issues a card, the Reg Z billing error rights) shape the outcomes; the retailer's evidence is the same as for a chargeback. The refund path is the lender's, and the plan's status follows the outcome. It is a chargeback with a different counterparty and a plan attached.

A dispute handled on the lender's rules from the order record is one the retailer wins or settles quickly, with the plan ending where it should.

How it runs

From the requestto the system of record.

A lender notifies the retailer of a dispute on an installment purchase, or a customer disputes with the retailer and is routed. Callvu opens the dispute on the order.

Customer
Raises the dispute, provides details where asked, and sees the plan's status.
Lender
Sets the dispute rules, receives the evidence through its portal and decides.
Disputes desk
Decides weak or high-value cases in the Decision Desk.
Callvu
Classifies, matches, assembles, chases, checks, routes, submits and writes.
  1. Classify and match

The lender, its dispute reason and process, the evidence window and the plan's status rules are classified with the claim type (not received, not as described, cancelled or returned, unauthorized); the dispute is matched to the order, the delivery, any return or refund in progress and any prior dispute by the customer; a refund already issued to the lender is flagged so the plan ends rather than the case being fought.

  2. Chase and verify the evidence

The evidence the lender's rules call for is assembled from the records (the order confirmation and the terms accepted, the delivery scan and signature, the return and refund status, the product description as displayed, the communications) and the carrier or the customer is chased for what the record lacks; the package is checked against the lender's requirements and the claim type.

  3. Decide

A case with the required evidence and under the desk's threshold is submitted by rule; a weak case, a high value, a return that should simply be refunded through the lender, or a pattern goes to the disputes desk in the Decision Desk with the package and only the allowed outcomes (submit the evidence, accept the dispute and refund through the lender, refund partially, or escalate).

  4. Submit and write back

The package is submitted through the lender's portal or interface before the window closes with the confirmation retained, the outcome is read back, the refund to the lender is issued where the dispute is accepted so the plan is cancelled or adjusted, and the dispute, the package, the outcome and the plan's status (paused during the dispute, resumed, cancelled) are written to the order management system, the system of record, with the customer told.

Where it ends: The dispute was handled on the lender's rules from the order record, submitted inside the window, and the plan ended, paused or resumed as the outcome required, with the refund to the right party. The Decision Trace shows the classification, the evidence checks and any desk decision; the Audit Trace shows the notice, the submission and the outcome with time.

Runtime enforcement

What is enforcedwhile the work runs.

The regulations preloaded in Callvu Studio and the bank's own policies, applied as steps that run, not lines in a binder. A step that breaks a rule does not run, so a completed run was compliant.

The handoff

Between the front doorand the back office.

The front door

The lender's notice through its portal or interface; a customer's dispute with the retailer routed to the same case.

The back office

The disputes desk decides only weak, large and pattern cases; the lender receives packages assembled from the record.

The Decision Desk

  • A weak case, a high value, a return that should be refunded through the lender or a pattern goes to the disputes desk in the Decision Desk with the package and only submit, accept and refund through the lender, refund partially, or escalate.

Questions

What buyers ask next,answered plainly.

How is a buy now pay later dispute different from a chargeback?

The counterparty is the lender with its own reasons, evidence rules and window, the plan's installments pause or continue by the lender's rules, and the refund goes to the lender to cancel or adjust the plan; the evidence from the order record is the same.

What if the customer already returned the item?

The match flags the return, and the case ends by refunding through the lender so the plan is cancelled, rather than being fought.

What does the customer see?

The plan's status (paused, resumed or cancelled) and the outcome, with the refund arriving through the lender.
