Self-employed income documentation
How do we collect the business returns, the profit and loss and the business account statements for a self-employed borrower, from the borrower or their accountant, and check them for completeness?
Treat the accountant as a party and the documents as a set. Callvu derives the self-employment documents the program requires from the business type and the years used (personal and business returns with all schedules and K-1s, the year-to-date profit and loss, business account statements, the business license or CPA letter), asks the borrower and, with the borrower's authorization, their accountant through links, reads each document for completeness (all schedules, signed, the right entity and year), flags what is missing or inconsistent, and files the complete set for the underwriter's income analysis.

The problem today
The business return is missing Schedule C, the K-1 is for the wrong entity, and the accountant was never asked.
A self-employed borrower uploads what they have: a personal return without all the schedules, a profit and loss they typed themselves, statements for one of two business accounts. The processor asks for the rest, the borrower asks the accountant, and the file waits for the accountant's busy season to end.
The programs are precise: two years of personal and business returns with all schedules and K-1s for the entities the borrower owns, a year-to-date profit and loss (and sometimes a balance sheet), business account statements that support it, and evidence the business exists and is open. Each document is checked for the entity, the year, the signatures and the schedules before the income can be analyzed.
The accountant can provide most of it in one upload, if asked directly with the borrower's authorization.
How it runs
From the requestto the system of record.
The application shows self-employment income used to qualify. Callvu derives the required set from the business type and the program and opens requests to the borrower and, where authorized, the accountant.
- Borrower
- Authorizes the accountant, uploads what they hold, and signs the profit and loss where required.
- Accountant
- Provides the returns, schedules, K-1s and the profit and loss through a link, with the borrower's authorization.
- Processor
- Sees the set's completeness and reviews only flagged inconsistencies.
- Underwriter
- Analyzes the income from a complete, checked set.
- Callvu
- Derives the set, chases both parties, reads and checks each document, flags and files.
Classify the business and the set
The business structure (sole proprietorship, partnership, S corporation, C corporation), the ownership percentage, the years used and the program derive the documents: the personal returns with the schedules that carry the business (Schedule C, E, F), the business returns with K-1s for each entity, the year-to-date profit and loss and balance sheet where required, the business account statements, and the existence evidence (a license, a CPA letter, a website or listing).
Chase and verify both parties
The borrower authorizes the accountant on a secure screen; the accountant receives a link to the items they hold and the borrower a link to the rest. Each document is read on arrival: the taxpayer and entity names and identifiers, the tax year, the presence of every schedule and K-1, signatures where required, and the profit and loss period and totals against the statements.
Flag inconsistencies
A missing schedule, a K-1 for an entity not on the application, a profit and loss that the statements do not support, or a return year that does not match the transcript order is flagged to the processor with the specifics, and the right party is asked for the fix.
Write back
The complete, checked set is filed to the loan in the LOS under the self-employment conditions, and the underwriter's income analysis starts from it, with the transcript match running on the same years.
Where it ends: The self-employment set is complete and consistent, collected from the borrower and the accountant without the borrower as a go-between, and the underwriter analyzes from checked documents. The Decision Trace shows the derived set and each check; the Audit Trace shows each party's uploads.
Runtime enforcement
What is enforcedwhile the work runs.
The regulations preloaded in Callvu Studio and the bank's own policies, applied as steps that run, not lines in a binder. A step that breaks a rule does not run, so a completed run was compliant.
The handoff
Between the front doorand the back office.
The front door
Links to the borrower and the accountant; the borrower authorizes on a secure screen.
The back office
The underwriter receives a complete set already checked for entity, year and schedules.
The Decision Desk
- An inconsistency the parties cannot resolve (a profit and loss the statements do not support, an entity not on the application) goes to the underwriter in the Decision Desk with the documents and only the allowed outcomes.
