Card limit and controls change

How do we handle card limit and control changes so that an increase over the threshold gets an approval and an ability-to-pay check?

Make the limit change a process with a threshold in it. Callvu identifies the cardholder, prefills the current limit and controls, applies the eligibility rule, completes a change inside the automatic range in the card system at once, and routes an increase over the threshold to card operations in the Decision Desk with the ability-to-pay information the rule requires. The problem today

A limit increase is a judgment call made on a phone call, and the record is the call note.

Today, without Callvu

A cardholder calls to raise their limit before a trip, or to lift a daily cash withdrawal cap, or to block foreign transactions. The agent checks a screen, asks a question or two, and changes the limit in the card system. For a credit line, the question of whether the cardholder can afford the increase is answered from memory or not at all.

Reg Z requires a card issuer to consider the consumer's ability to make the required minimum payments before increasing a credit line, based on income or assets and current obligations. A debit limit is the bank's own policy, with its own threshold and its own approver. Neither is enforced by a field in the card system.

The simple changes are the volume: travel settings, merchant category blocks, temporary caps. Each one keyed by an agent is a call the customer did not need to make and a change that can be keyed wrong.

How it runs

From the requestto the system of record.

A cardholder asks for a limit or control change in the app, on the web, on a call, in a branch, or through an AI agent. Callvu identifies the cardholder and opens the card's current limits and controls.

Customer
Requests the change, confirms the prefilled card and limits, and provides income or obligation information where an increase requires it.
Card operations
Decides increases over the threshold in the Decision Desk and sees every change with its rule result.
Callvu
Identifies, prefills, applies eligibility and the threshold, routes over-threshold increases with the ability-to-pay information, and writes the change to the card system.
  1. Identify

The cardholder is authenticated under the bank's policy for the channel, with a step-up for an increase above the automatic range.

  2. Prefill

Callvu reads the card, its current limit, its controls (daily cash, foreign use, merchant categories, online use) and the account standing from the card system and the core, and shows them. The customer changes only what they want changed.

  3. Classify and apply eligibility

The change is classified: a control change, a temporary cap, a decrease, an increase inside the automatic range, or an increase above it. Eligibility runs from the bank's policy: account age, delinquency, recent changes, and for a credit card the ability-to-pay check Reg Z requires before any credit line increase.

  4. Decide

A control change, a decrease or an increase inside the automatic range that passes eligibility is approved by the rule. An increase above the threshold, or any request that fails a rule, goes to card operations in the Decision Desk with the ability-to-pay information and only the allowed outcomes: approve, approve a lower amount, or decline with a reason.

  5. Write back

The change is written to the card system with its effective date and, for a temporary change, its expiry. The customer receives a confirmation, and for a credit line decline the reason is recorded for the notice.

Where it ends: The new limit or control is live in the card system with its rule result, any approval and its expiry on the record. The Decision Trace shows the eligibility and ability-to-pay checks; the Audit Trace shows every step and the person who approved an increase.

Runtime enforcement

What is enforcedwhile the work runs.

The regulations preloaded in Callvu Studio and the bank's own policies, applied as steps that run, not lines in a binder. A step that breaks a rule does not run, so a completed run was compliant.

The handoff

Between the front doorand the back office.

The front door

The app, the web, a call, a branch, or an AI agent over MCP. Identification and any income information are captured on process-controlled screens, never inside a chat.

The back office

Card operations decides only the increases above the threshold, with the ability-to-pay information already on the case. Every other change reaches the card system from the rule, without an agent.

The Decision Desk

  • An increase above the threshold, or a request that fails eligibility, goes to card operations in the Decision Desk with the card, the standing, the ability-to-pay information and only the allowed outcomes: approve, approve a lower amount, or decline with a reason.
  • The approver is nudged until they act, and the customer sees the request is under review.

Questions

What buyers ask next,answered plainly.

Which changes complete without a person?

Control changes, decreases, temporary caps and increases inside the automatic range that pass eligibility. The range and the threshold are the bank's policy.

How is ability to pay handled for a credit line increase?

The check runs before any credit line increase is written, inside or above the automatic range, using income or assets and current obligations, and the result is in the Decision Trace.

What happens to a temporary change?

It carries an expiry. When it passes, Callvu restores the card system and tells the customer.

What does a declined increase produce?

A recorded reason and the adverse action notice within the Reg B period, with the FCRA content where a consumer report was used.
